patient , is not currently included in the canon of classic novels, however, it will certainly be one day and therefore deserves to be included in my classic book review series. published in 1992, the novel has been translated into 38 languages and made into an oscar-winning movie. last month (july) the novel won the golden man booker prize, voted as the readers’ favourite in 50 years. the title suggests a story about an english patient, and while the main story is about a patient it really encompasses four stories about four characters thrown together by ww ⅱ and surprisingly, the patient is not english. ondaatje engages a third-person omniscient narrator and uses the shifting point of view of each of the main characters to tell the story intertwining the present and the past, moving back and forth with present action, descriptions, thoughts, and dialogue. the english patient begins in 1945 and is set in italy, north of florence, as the second world war is about to end. hana, a twenty-year-old canadian nurse working with the allies, decides to remain alone in villa san girolamo, a half-bombed-out building, with a patient so badly burnt he is black and unrecognizable, while her colleagues move to safer ground. the mannerism and accent of the patient seem to be british, hence he is referred to as “the english patient.” he claims he does not know who he is, however, his memory of previous events in the north african desert where he spent eight years and a love affair he had with katharine clifton, another man’s wife, remains vivid. as hana settles into her routine caring for the patient a man with missing thumbs hidden under bandaged hands appears at the villa. he is david caravaggio, an italian-canadian and a long-time friend of hana’s father. both hana and caravaggio are characters from ondaatje’s 1987 novel, in the skin of a lion . caravaggio believes he knows the patient and is obsessed with confirming who he is. in the meantime, he is addicted to morphine and steals vials of it from the stock hana has for her patient. one day two bomb defusers (called sappers) appear at the villa while hana nonchalantly plays the piano. the germans have retreated from the area, but besides burying mines all over the countryside, they have the nasty habit of placing pencil mines in musical instruments. one sapper anxiously surveys the room and finds “there is no danger, no timing wire.” hana is saved. trained by lord suffolk, an english gentleman, kip, the sapper, is a sikh. he sets up his tent on the grounds of the villa and becomes a part of the foursome family. he eventually grows to like the patient and they spend much time discussing things of mutual interests and sharing condensed milk. kip also likes hana and they become lovers. the english patient is by no means an easy read. it is neither linear nor chronological. employing flashbacks, flash-forwards, dialogue between the four characters, and snippets from herodus, the book and only item the patient arrived with at the british camp, ondaatje constructs a fascinating tale by gradually exposing the past lives of all four characters. the novel delves into caravaggio’s life in canada as a small-time thief, a skill that endeared the british intelligence to offer him a job. a tear-jerking scene reveals how he lost his thumbs. we learn about hana and her life in canada, the death of her father and how she longs to see clara, her stepmother, again. we learn about kip’s life in india, about his family and how his brother was thrown in jail because he refused to fight for the british colonial masters. but the most intriguing tale is the “english patient’s” life in the desert where he prepared maps for the british and searched for oases, and the details about his torrid romance with katharine clifton. near the end of the story, we learn how he became burnt and that he is count ladislaus de almasy. while the novel uncovers the lives of the four main characters and zeros in on the coming together of these lives, ondaatje infuses parts of his obvious extensive research about certain aspects of the story to educate us about desert life, tribes living there, the various desert winds, and amazing caves. in addition, throughout the story, he disperses minute fascinating details that conjures up vivid imagery. these two passages below are good examples: “as the englishman wakes she [hana] bends over his body and places a third plum into his mouth. his open mouth holds it like water, the jaw not moving. he looks as if he will cry from this pleasure…he brings his hand up and wipes from his lips the last dribble, which his tongue cannot reach…” “four hours later, he [caravaggio] runs over the grass in his socks, his shadow curled under him, painted by the moon.” but it is the structure of the prose and the intricate web of the story that most captures our imagination and keeps you reading to find out “what next? ‘the novel ends as the war ends. the languages and has spawned movies and musicals. there is no mystery about the title―the story is about a young girl named anne who lived on a farm called green gables. montgomery employs a third-person omniscient narrator to tell the story, allowing readers to view the shifting perspectives of the main characters and this helps us to understand and sympathize with both anne and her new guardians. in anne of green gables # 1, montgomery weaves a fascinating, touching, and sometimes amusing story about an orphan girl. set in prince edward island―one of canada’s maritime provinces―in the 1800s, we assume the story takes place after this province joined the confederation in 1873. the story covers a five-year period and incorporates all the seasons during that time. marilla and mathew cuthbert, two unmarried siblings, live together at green gables. at age sixty, mathew has a bad heart and is not as strong as he would like. much to the disapproval of mrs. lynde, their nosey, know-it-all neighbour, the cuthberts decide to adopt a boy from an orphanage hoping to train him to help on the farm. but when mathew arrives late at the train station to collect the boy, he finds an eleven-year-old girl waiting for him. it is getting late, there is no one else around, so he has no choice but to take her home for the night. shy and afraid of women in general, mathew finds the girl loquacious and somewhat amusing and during the drive home, he grows to like her. at green gables, marilla is incensed; the girl must be returned to the orphanage. the next day, the quiet, mostly non-verbal mathew hints strongly that they should keep her and marilla relents. as the story progresses readers become captivated with anne’s wild imagination, her antics, and her signature expression
